One of Don's passions is the growing of tropical orchids, which are housed in a 27' greenhouse on the lawn just to the south of Achamore House. In the greenhouse are over 600 orchids, with more than 50 genera represented.
Roughly 80% of the orchids are species, the rest being man-made hybrids. While the chief purpose of Don's collection is for the making of the flower essences which we sell world-wide, visitors nevertheless are welcome to have a wee tour of the collection, to see what is in bloom at any given time of the year.
The collections has a focus on the slipper orchids of South and Central America (the Phragmipediums), the cloud-forest orchids of South America, and the bizarre and amazing Bulbophyllums which are found throughout the tropics but which are predominately located in SE Asia.
